People today are tapping their phones to pay for groceries, board a flight, and enter football stadiums. That same seamless technology is making its way into church lobbies and sanctuaries.
Over the last few months, ministry leaders have asked us whether they can use NFC/Tap Tags to streamline connection cards and event registrations.
This guide will give you everything you need to know about tap tags for churches. Then build your own system in four simple steps.
What is a Tap Tag (NFC) and How Does It Work for Churches?
Quick Answer: A Tap Tag is a small sticker embedded with a microchip and antenna. It uses NFC (Near Field Communication) technology to instantly open a website link on a user’s smartphone when they tap their phone near or against it. No external apps required.
NFC features are enabled by default on most modern devices, so the user experience is simple. People attending your church won’t need to open their camera or settings menu. They simply open their phone, tap the tag (as with Google or Apple Pay), and a banner pops up. When the user clicks the banner, the tag’s linked page (that you create and customize with your church links) opens.
The links on your page can feature:
- Digital connection card
- Secure giving links
- Sermon notes & Bible app links
- Upcoming Event registrations
How to Set Up DIY Church NFC Tags in 4 Steps
There are services you can subscribe to for NFC technology, but you don’t have to. It’s pretty simple to purchase and set up your own tags for a fraction of the cost.
- Purchase Your NFC Tags
The tags themselves come in different formats, such as quarter-sized dots with adhesive backs and ultra-thin stickers. You will eventually stick these to the promotional items you create or purchase. You can get these from Amazon or other online stores. Just search for NFC tags.
- Create Your Landing Page
You will find Content Pages in the main navigation menu when logged in to Churchteams. An example Content Page is shown below. Click to create a new Content Page. Give it a header image with your church logo. Use two evenly sized rows, then drag the image content into those spaces. Browse or upload images to represent each action step. Then add in the links for each image. We recommend doing this step on a laptop or desktop computer rather than your phone.
- Write (Program) the Tag
Once you’ve created your Content Page in Churchteams, you’ll see the URL link for the Content Page at the top of the screen. Copy that link and email it to yourself so that you have it on your phone.
Because you need its NFC capabilities, you must use your phone to write these tags by downloading the NFC Tools app. It is free and works on both Apple and Android phones. Open the app, then click the Write option. On the next page, click “Add a record” and paste in the URL for the Content Page you just created.
Next, click the Write option and tap the tag or sticker you want to program. The app will tell you when it’s done. Your tag or sticker is now ready for use. You can also save this link in the app for future use for a small one-time upgrade fee. - Add the Sticker/Tag to Permanent Signage and Seatbacks
Once you have the sticker or tag programmed, just place it on the card, sticker, brochure, flyer, or other permanent promotional item that your communication person or team creates or purchases. You can search Amazon or Promotional Product sites for disks or cards.
Place these items on the backs of chairs, in seat-back pockets, on signs, or anywhere else you want them. Since the phone can read a tag when it is within about an inch, you can also stick tap tags to the back of cardstock or a sign with your image or content on the front.
Tap Tags, QR Codes, or Text-to-Church: When to Use Which?
Of course, you aren’t limited to just Tap Tags! Churchteams offers a variety of options for engaging people in your church. In fact, combining these options offers the best accessibility!
| Technology | Best Use | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| NFC Tap Tags | Seat backs, localized signage, modern tech-savvy attendees. | Fastest user experience; requires zero app or camera navigation. | Requires physical proximity (within a few inches). |
| QR Codes | Large projector screens, stage backdrops, print bulletins. | Highly familiar to all age groups; works from a distance. | Requires users to open their camera and aim it accurately. |
| Text-to-Church (Keywords) | Live verbal announcements from the stage. | Works on older phones; incredibly memorable when spoken aloud. | Requires text input from the user. |
The Hybrid Approach
The most effective strategy is to combine these tools on a single piece of physical signage. For example, you can print a beautiful seat-back sign that says “Connect With Us” featuring a QR Code on the front, a Text-to-Church Keyword at the bottom, and a hidden NFC Tap Tag glued directly behind the graphic. You can even promote “Three Ways to Connect.”
All three methods point to the exact same mobile landing page—ensuring every attendee can engage using the method they prefer most.
